Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject new compound useful as an antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound having controllable spontaneous polarization. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [R is a 1-8C alkyl; R is a 1-10C straight-chain alkyl; W is single bond, O, etc.; X and Y are each single bond, etc.; rings A, B and C are each pyridine-2,5-diyl, etc.; the ring D is a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene; (m) and (n) are each 1 or 0; C labeled with *is asymmetric carbon], e.g. (-)-(1S,3S)-4-[4-(4-decyloxyphenyl) phenylcarboxy]benzoic acid 3-fluoro-1-methylheptyl ester. The compound of the formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in the presence of a dehydrative condensation agent (e.g. ethyl polyphosphate or dicyclohexylcarbodiimide) or by converting the compound of the formula II into an acid halide and reacting with the compound of the formula III in the presence of a base.
