PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyvinyl acetate-based emulsion, hardly increasing viscosity in polymerization, and further, having good viscosity stability in storage. SOLUTION: This polyvinyl acetate-based emulsion is produced by emulsion polymerization using an acetoacetylated polyvinyl alcohol in the presence of viscosity lowering agent comprising (1) one or two kinds of compounds selected from sulfite, bisulfite, metabisulfite and thiosulfite or in the presence of these compounds together with (2) ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid or ethylenediamine tetraacetate. Since increase of viscosity in polymerization is suppressed thereby, emulsion excellent in viscosity stability and handleability is obtained. The viscosity stability is further improved by adding a storage stabilizer comprising the above (1) and (2) to the emulsion after polymerization. The storage stabilizer is effective for polyvinyl acetate-based emulsion containing acetoacetylated polyvinyl alcohol produced by an arbitrary method.
