Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polystyrene foam which can be recycled into styrene by mixing a polystyrene with a basic metal oxide being a catalytic decomposition catalyst therefor and foaming the mixture with a blowing agent inert thereto. SOLUTION: A mixture comprising a polystyrene and 1w-10wt.% basic metal oxide is foamed with a blowing agent inert to the metal oxide to obtain a polystyrene foam. When it is wasted, it can be recycled into styrene by decomposing it by heating to 300-450 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The basic oxide is Na2 O, MgO, CaO or the like, and among them, CaO is desirable. When the basic metal oxide carried by a porous inorganic filler is used, it can exhibit improved effectiveness desirably. The blowing agent used is a nitrogen gas, a chloro fluorocarbon, propane or the like.
