Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the adhesion of magnetic substance without lowering detection sensitivity and exactly measure a distance between two points. SOLUTION: Two magnetic substances 5 are vertically provided on an outer plate 13 at a prescribed interval, opposed to the end face of the magnetic substance 5 and a magneto-strictive line 8 is extended. A long primary coil 11 is wired in the longitudinal direction of a chain body 1 at the side of the chain body 1 slightly near to the magneto-strictive line 8, and the magnetic substances 5,... are excited when they are passed through the primary coil 11. A drive pulse is given to the magneto-strictive line 8 from a drive pulse transmission part 21 at a prescribed cycle, a receiver 9 utilizes reverse magneto-strictive effect to detect torsion elastic wave, and a timer 23 measures the propagation time of the torsion elastic wave respectively. A distance calculation part 24 calculates deviation td of each propagation time to calculate a distance between the magnetic substances 5, and an elongation calculation part 26 calculates the elongation of the chain body 1 from the distance between the magnetic substances 5.
