Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new silacyclohexane compound, low in driving voltage, exhibiting liquid crystal properties in a wide temperature range, improved in low temperature performance, improve in liquid crystal characteristics, and useful for liquid crystal displays, etc. SOLUTION: The new silacyclohezane compound of formula I [R is a 1-10C linear alkyl, a 3-8C branched alkyl, a 2-7C alkoxyalkyl, a 1-10C mono or difluoroalkyl, a 2-8C alkenyl; when (i) is 1, groups of formulas II and III are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or trans-1,4-disilacyclohexylene having Si at the 4-position wherein the Si has a substituent such as H, F, Cl, CH3 , etc., and either one of the groups of formulas I and II is trans-1,4-disilacyclohexylene; when (i) is 0, the groups of formulas I and II are each trans 1-,4- disilacyclohexylene; X is H, CN, F, Cl, CF3 , etc.; Y, Z1 , Z2 are each H, F; (i), (ii) are each 0,1; (iii) is 0, 1, 2] is useful for liquid crystal display elements, etc.
