Summary:PURPOSE: To provide an internal combustion engine-driven discharge lamp lighting device capable of lighting a discharge lamp without using a ballast made of a leakage transformer. CONSTITUTION: The output of a generator 11 driven by an internal combustion engine 10 is applied directly to both ends of a discharge lamp 12. Output voltage vs. output current characteristics exhibit a drooping characteristic. The output voltage at the time of no load is higher than the discharge starting voltage of the lamp 12. A short-circuiting current has the amplitude necessary to limit the discharge current immediately after the lamp 12 starts to be discharged to an allowable value or less. The output voltage vs. output current characteristics of the generator 11 are so set as to hold the terminal voltage and discharge current of the lamp at the normal time in a rated range.
