Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a defect of a magnetic tape with high accuracy, with a simple constitution and at low cost. SOLUTION: In a light emitting optical system 30, a halogen lamp 31 is positioned shorter than a focal length of a condenser lens 42, and light emitted from this lamp 31 is projected via the lens 42 to a magnetic layer surface of the magnetic tape at a disposition angle θ. A level of the light irradiating the magnetic layer surface of the tape is uniform. An optical axis and a focus of a light receving lens part 62 are adjusted by adjusting screws 63e to 63g in light receiving optical system 50. Reflected light from the magnetic layer surface of the tape is enlarged and projected to a CCD line sensor 51 by the light receiving lens part 62. The tape is traveled from a reel 23 to a reel 24, and a defect on the magnetic layer surface of the tape is accurately detected based on a sensor signal from the sensor 51.
