Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a large quantity of soot from being generated when NOx is discharged from an NOx absorbent and keep the average air-fuel ratio in a combustion chamber rich. SOLUTION: An NOx absorbent 17 absorbing NOx when the air-fuel ratio of the flowing-in exhaust gas is lean and discharging the absorbed NOx when the air-fuel ratio of the flowing-in exhaust gas is rich is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. When NOx is to be discharged from the NOx absorbent 17, the average air-fuel ratio in a combustion chamber 3 is switched from lean to rich, and the injection fuel containing oxygen is used at least at this time.
