Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a lightweight Al composite body small in the coefficient of thermal expansion by mixing Si-Al alloy powder having a specified compsn. and Cu powder at a specified ratio and subjecting to compacting by hot press or the like. SOLUTION: Si-Al allay powder of <=590μm having a compsn. composed of, by weight, 50 to 90% Si, and the balance Al is mixed with Cu powder in which the coefficient of thermal expansion is lower than that of Al to prepare a powdery mixture composed of Si-Al alloy powder composed of 5 to 50% Cu powder, and the balance Si-Al allay powder. This powdery mixture is subjected to hot working by a method such as hot press to produce a compacted body, from which the lightweight composite material low in the coefficient of thermal expansion is produced.
