Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bar code reader which precisely reads the ITF code of wide width. SOLUTION: Plural line sensors 10a, 10b and 10c are provided for CCD 12 and a CCD driving circuit 14 sets exposure time different for the respective line sensors. Picture signals for the respective line sensors are inputted to a waveform processing means from output terminals 21a, 21b and 21c through a first filter circuit 15a. The waveform processing means binarizes the respective picture signals, generates picture data for the respective line sensors and stores them in a storage means. A decoding means constituted by a microcomputer sequentially decodes data and a read result on decoded data is outputted. Since sensitivity is changed for the respective line sensors and it is set, one of the line sensors 10a, 10b and 10c outputs the picture signal of an appropriate level for a range with wide brightness and darkness.
