PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the easy detection of leakage of a coolant by the human senses or its accurate detection by a coolant sensor in a freezing apparatus using a flammable natural coolant. SOLUTION: An odorant detectable even by the human olfactory sense is added to a natural coolant which is flammable, colorless and odorless. Thus, even in the case where the coolant leaks by some rare accident, the odor of the added odorant is detected by the human olfactory sense, and the leakage is immediately recognized. Further, a substance easily detectable by separating it from substances existing in the surroundings is added to the natural coolant as a mixing agent, and even in the case where the natural coolant is a lower hydrocarbon similar to substances existing in the surroundings, the leakage of the natural coolant can be accurately detected by separating the mixed agent from the substances existing in the surroundings and detecting it by a coolant sensor. Accordingly, the best measures for securing safety against the leakage of the natural coolant having inflammability can be taken quickly when it occurs, and an accident attributable to the leakage can be surely avoided before it happens, and high safety regarding the operation of an apparatus is ensured.
