Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply obtain the subject compound safe on environments by reacting a dialkyl malonate with a magnesium dihalide and a tertiary amine in a substantially water-insoluble aromatic hydrocarbon solvent and subsequently reacting the reaction product with a benzyl halide. SOLUTION: (B) A dialkyl malonate of formula I (R , R are each independently an alkyl) is reacted with (C) a magnesium dihalide and (D) a tertiary amine in the presence of (A) an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent (preferably toluene, xylene and/or chlorobenzene) and subsequently with (E) a benzoyl halide of formula II (X, Y are each independently a halogen; n is an integer of 1-5) to obtain (F) a benzoyl malonate of formula III. The component A is used in a volume of 0.5-4 liter, preferably 1-2 liter, per mole of component B. |
