Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out a reduction, etc., in the number of steps and produce the subject compound capable of manifesting strong inhibiting activities against calmodulins and useful as an improving agent for cerebropathy on a large scale by diazotizing a specific compound and then treating the resultant compound with a reducing agent. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R and R are each a 1-6C alkyl, a 1-6C alkoxyl, trifluoromethyl, 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl, trifluoromethoxy, 2,2,2- trifluoroethoxy, a 1-6C alkylthio, etc.) or its salt is diazotized and the resultant compound is then treated with a reducing agent to afford a compound of formula II, concretely 5,6-dimethoxy-1H-imidazole-3-acetic acid. The compound of formula II is preferably further condensed in the presence of a dehydrating agent by using an alcohol or reacted with a diazoalkane to provide a compound of formula III (R is a 1-6C alkyl), which is preferably further reduced.
