Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new polycarboxylic acid or its salt, useful as a chelating agent for a neutral detergent, etc., and excellent in sequestering properties. SOLUTION: This polycarboxylic acid or its salt it represented by formula I[R and R are each a 1-4C alkyl; X and Y are each H or an organic group represented by formula II (R is H, a 1-4C alkyl, etc.; R and R are each H or a 1-4C alkyl; M is H<+> or a salt-forming cation)], e.g. sodium salt of 2,3- butanediol disuccinic acid ether. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting a diol derivative represented by formula III (e.g. 2,3- butanediol) with an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, etc., represented by formula IV (e.g. maleic acid) in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. an alkaline earth metallic hydroxide. The reactional temperature and reactional time are >=50 deg.C and 30min to 24hr at this time. |
