Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a device to be small in size, light in weight and inexpensive by providing a sheet document reading position in a thick document reading region on a platen surface and a means for retreating a thick document butting ruler member provided in the moving path of a sheet document, from the top surface of a platen. SOLUTION: When a tick document is read, the document is butted against the thick document butting ruler member 14, to be positioned and read in the thick document reading region. When the sheet document is read, the sheet document is fed by an automatic sheet document feeder, to be read at the sheet document reading position provided in the thick document reading region. At this time, the ruler member 14 provided in the moving path of the sheet document is retreated from the top surface of the platen by a retreating means, so that the sheet document can be moved on the platen surface without being butted against the ruler member 14. At this time, the retreating means is constituted of a projection 11 and a leaf spring.
