Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface-treated aluminum can excellent in slip properties before coating, retention of appearance after treatment, corrosion resistance, adhesion to a coating film, etc., by treating an aluminum can with a metal surface treatment contg. a specific polycondensate. SOLUTION: A polycondensate (salt) is produced by the polycondensation of a phenol deriv. represented by formula I (wherein X1 is H, hydroxyl, or optionally a substd. 1-5C alkyl) (e.g. m-cresol), a dialkylbenzene glycol represented by formula II (wherein R1 and R2 are each H or an optionally substd. 1-5C alkyl; and (k') and (m') are each 1-5) (e.g. p-xylene glycol)), an amine represented by formula III (wherein R3 and R4 are each H, an optionally substd. 1-5C alkyl, or an alkanol group) (e.g. diethanolamine), and formaldehyde. The surface of an aluminum can is treated with a metal surface treatment contg. the polycondensate (salt) as the active ingredient.
