Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain 1,2-dichloroethane, capable of suppressing the reduction of a catalyst activity with time and its powdering by performing an oxychlorination with supplying a raw material gas containing HCl, ethylene and oxygen into a reaction vessel packed with a loaded catalyst within a specific flow-rate variation. SOLUTION: This method for producing 1,2-dichloroethane capable of relieving the reduction of a catalyst activity with time and its powdering, and enabling a stable continuous operation for a long period, is constituted by supplying a raw material gas containing hydrogen chloride, ethylene and air [molar ratio of (hydrogen chloride/ethylene/oxygen)=(1/0.54/0.27)] into a fixed bed reaction vessel packed with a loaded catalyst consisting of loaded cupric chloride on alumina, keeping the variation of the flow rate of the raw material gas during the normal operation within ±2.0%, and performing an oxychlorination reaction under the conditions of a temperature at 100-400 deg.C and a pressure at 0.3-20kg/cm to industrially advantageously obtain the objective 1,2- dichloroethane which is useful for the raw material of vinyl chloride and as an organic solvent, etc.
