Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel FR198248 substance which is obtained by culturing an Aspergillus microorganism capable of producing the FR198248 substance, has strong medicinal activity, particularly excellent antiviral activity and is useful as an antiviral agent. SOLUTION: This substance is acidic, melts at 112-117 deg.C (with decomposition), dissolves in dimethyl sulfoxide and methanol, slightly soluble in water, and insoluble in dichloromethane, in color reactions, positive to cerium sulfate, ferric chloride and iodine vapor but negative to ninhydrin and Molish reactions. This substance has strong medicinal activity, particularly excellent antiviral activity and is useful as an antiviral agent. This novel substance is obtained by culturing a microorganism capable of producing this substance in Aspergillus, for example, Aspergillus terreus No. 13830 strain and collecting its product.
