Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict lower cycle service life characteristics or shelf life as an alkaline storage battery by improving a hydrogen storage alloy of Mm-Ni and AB5 type even when the cobalt content in the alloy is small. SOLUTION: An alloy in which cobalt atom% in a hydrogen storage alloy is 15% or less is 10 to 100μm in the average particle size, at least one type to be selected from among cobalt metal, cobalt oxide, cobalt hydroxide, and cobalt salt is added to this alloy and is applied and agitated in the alkaline solution at the added specific gravity of 1.1 or more and at a temperature of 80 to 130 deg.C, and the cobalt concentration is higher than that of the center of the alloy particle.
