Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce a new dicyanopyrazine derivative, expressed by a specific formula and useful as a synthetic raw material for an optical recording material, a photoelectric conversion material, etc., or as a fluorochrome. SOLUTION: This dicyanopyrazine derivative is expressed by formula I [Y and Z are each CH2 X (X is a halogen), CH2 P(R )3 X (R is an alkyl, etc.), CH=P(R )3 or CH=CR R (R and R are each H, an alkyl, etc.)], preferably a compound of formula II. Further, a compound of formula II is preferably obtained by reacting a diketone compound (e.g. 1,4-dibromo-2,3-butanedione) of the formula, XCH2 COCOCH2 X with 2,3-diaminomaleonitrile in a solvent, e.g. methanol at a temperature in the range from 0 deg.C to the boiling point of the solvent.
