Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to operate discharge lamps without using a stabilizer consisting of a leakage transformer. SOLUTION: Electrically isolated generating coils W1 to W4 are provided for driving discharge lamps to a generator 11 driven by an internal combustion engine. Each output voltage of these generating coils W1 to W4 is impressed directly to the discharge lamps L1 to L4. The magnetic coupling of each magnetic circuit of the generating coils W1 to W4 is kept loose. Then, the characteristics of the generator are determined in such manners that the characteristic of the output voltage versus output current of the generating coils W1 to W4 shows the drooping characteristic, the output voltage without a load is higher than the discharge starting voltage of the discharge lamps, a short- circuit current is large enough to limit the discharging current of the discharge lamps immediately after the start of discharge to a permissible value, and the terminal voltage and discharging current of the discharge lamps in a steady state are maintained within the range of rating.
