Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject resin having a high glass transition temperature and useful as a raw material for thermosetting type powder coating materials, toner binder, etc., for electrophotography by subjecting a phenolic hydroxyl group-ended resin having a specific molecular weight to addition reaction with an alkylene oxide. SOLUTION: A resin having phenolic hydroxyl group ends, represented by formula I [R and R are each H, methyl, ethyl or phenyl; (n) is an integer of >=1 and average polymerization degree ηav is 1.2 to 15. 0] and having 500-5000 number-average molecular weight is subjected to addition reaction with a 2-5C alkylene oxide represented by formula II (R is H or a 1-3C alkyl) [e. g. propylene oxide] to provide the objective polyol resin represented by formula III [R is a 2-4C alkylene; (x) and (y) are each an integer of >=1 and 2<=(x)+(y)<=16] and having a solid shape at ambient temperature and >=50 deg.C glass transition temperature, useful as a raw material for thermosetting type powder coating and as a toner binder for electrophotography and having a polyalkylene oxide group at the ends.
