Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a background color from having a pattern in an error diffusing process when an assigning intensity levels (natural picture, motion picture, etc.) and the background color (uniform monochromatic background color) are displayed separately on the same screen of a PDP(plasma display panel). SOLUTION: This device consists of an input terminal 20 which inputs a video signal corresponding to the assigning intensity levels and the background color signal corresponding to the background color 12 like signals included in a television signal of the EDTV(extended definition TV) system, an error diffusion circuit 22 which performs the error diffusing process for the video signal, a control circuit 30 which outputs a switching signal corresponding to the image display position of the PDP 28, and a selecting circuit 24 which selectively switches the output signal of the error diffusion circuit 22 and the background signal according to the switching signal and outputs them to the PDP 28. In this case, the assigning intensity levels 10a after the error diffusing process are displayed in the assigning intensity level display area 15 on the PDP 28 and the background color 12 which is not processed by error diffusion is displayed in the background color display area 16, so that the background color 12 does not have the pattern due to the error diffusing process.
