Summary:PURPOSE: To surely detect the degraded state of a laser diode before the laser diode turns oscillation disability. CONSTITUTION: Concerning a device for detecting the degraded state of a laser diode (LD 21) to be used for a burst type optical communication circuit, a voltage e6 concerning a prebias current value just before taking the LD 21 into a laser oscillation area is compared with a degradation discriminative voltage e5 by a comparator 33. Then, the event of e6>e5 is discriminated as the LD degraded state, an LD degradation detect signal is outputted to a flip- flop 35 as a start signal, and an LED 36 for displaying an alarm on the degraded state of the LD 21 is set in a turned-on state.
