Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably flat a head on a disk with a slight spacing, to provide a medium with such projections so as to avoid the increasing of the starting torque necessary for the revolution of a motor at the time of stop, to lessen wear even in high-speed sliding and to improve CSS(contact start stop) durability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is constituted by forming a magnetic layer and protective layer directly or via another layer on a disk- shaped nonmagnetic substrate and, in some cases, further, forming a lubricative layer on the protective layer. In such a case, the medium has projections of 1 to 100nm in height, 0.5 to 5μm in width, <=1μm in the average value of the area of the figure enclosed by the contours at a height of 1nm below the vertex and 10 to 10 pieces/mm density on at least a part of its front surface. In addition, the surface hardness of the medium is specified to >=50Gpa. The initial static friction coefft. of the recording medium surface and a magnetic head slider is reduced to <=0.5 by using such recording medium.
