Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas-generating chemical having the finest balance in terms of technique, economy and mode of life and an inflator having this gas- generating chemical. SOLUTION: This gas-generating chemical for inflating an air bag of a vehicle passage restraining system is the gas-generating chemical contg. any of N2 H4 , N2 O4 , N2 O4 or H2 CO3 . These gas-generating chemicals are housed into the reaction vessel of the inflator having the reaction vessel for inflating the air bag of the vehicle passenger restraining system. The N2 H4 is housed in the reaction vessel 3 and a soln. contg. bromine oxide ion reacting with the N2 H4 is housed in the reaction vessel 4 in Fig. A film 5 is destroyed when an igniter 2 is ignited to explode. Gaseous bromine, gaseous nitrogen and steam are then generated and the air bag is inflated by these gases.
