Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain a ceramic material having high strength with small variation in the strength and having excellent toughness by applying a sintering assistant on columnar ceramic particles, then applying a ceramic source material on the particles, compacting and calcining in a specified shape. CONSTITUTION: A sintering assistant 2 is applied on the surface of columnar ceramic particle 1 as the core, on which a ceramic source material 3 of the same material as the columnar ceramic particle is applied. These particles are compacted while oriented along a specified direction. The obtd. compacted body is fired so as to grow the columnar particles as the cores to obtain the objective high-density columnar particle oriented ceramic material. To coat the columnar source material particle, a short fiber such as a whisker (columnar source particle) comprising the main component of the objective ceramic material is used as the core. After the sintering assistant is applied on the surface of the whisker, the ceramic source material same as the core ceramic material is applied on the surface of the particle. The material used is, for example, selected from nonoxide ceramics such as silicon nitride and silicon carbide or oxide ceramics such as alumina and mullite.
