Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound represented by a specific formula, exhibiting an antiferrodielectric property in a wide temperature range, and giving an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition stabilized in the antiferroelectric property, when added to an antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This compound of formula I [R is a (substituted) 1-18C alkyl; R is a 2-10C liner alkyl; W is a single bond,-O-,-COO-, etc.; X, Y, Z are each a single bond, -COO-, -C≡C-; the ring A, the ring B, the ring C, the ring D are each a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; m, n are each 1, 0; the * signal expresses an asymmetric carbon whose absolute configuration is R, S], e.g. (-)-(1R*, 2R*)-4-[4-(4-decyloxyphenyl)phenylcarboxy]benzoic acid 1,2-dimethylheptyl ester. The compound is obtained e.g. by reacting a carboxylic acid of formula II with an alcohol of formula III in the presence of a dehydration condensing agent such as ethyl polyphosphate, etc. |
