Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound capable of exhibiting stable antiferroelectricity and useful for liquid crystal display elements suitable for applying to optical shutters, printer heads, etc. SOLUTION: The compound of formula I [R is a (substituted) 1-18C alkyl; R is a linear 1-10C alkyl; W is a single bond, -O-, -COO-, -OCOO-, -OCOO-, X, Y, Z are each a single bond, -COO-,-C≡C-; ring A, ring B, ring C and ring D are each 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, etc., which may be substituted with two fluorine atoms; m, n are each 0, 1; k is 0-4; *exhibits an asymmetric carbon]. For example, (-)-(1S*, 2S*)-4-[4-(4- decyloxyphenyl)phenylcarboxy]benzoic acid 2-pentylcyclopentyl ester. The compound of formula I is obtained by subjecting a compound of formula II and a compound of formula III to a mutual dehydrative condensation reaction. |
