Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound to be blended with cosmetics and medicines, having excellent foaming properties, emulsifying properties and cleaning properties as a nonionic surfactant and improved in stability with time in the presence of water by reacting maltitol with an epoxy alkane. CONSTITUTION: The whole amount or >=10% of hydrous maltitol is dissolved in a reaction solvent (e.g. N-methylpyrrolidone) and heated until the temperature exceeds the boiling point of water by >=5 deg.C and part at this temperature for >=18min. Maltitol is then reacted with a 10-20C epoxyalkane in the solvent to give the objective compound.
