PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium excellent in output characteristics and durability in which high density recording is possible. CONSTITUTION:This medium consists of a magnetic supporting body l, nonmagnetic layer 2 and magnetic layer 3. The nonmagnetic layer 2 and the magnetic layer 3 are formed by simultaneous double coating of a nonmagnetic coating material and a magnetic coating material. The nonmagnetic layer 2 contains carbon and other inorg. filler component. The pH and the compounded amt. of carbon in the nonmagnetic layer 2 satisfy the relation (1);1< pHX(compounded amt.) <50, and the difference of pH between the carbon and other inorg. filler component is <=3. The magnetic layer 3 contains a magnetic powder, carbon and other inorg. filler component. The pH and the compounded amt. of carbon in the magnetic layer 3 satisfy the relation (2); 0.5<pHX(compounded amt.) <30. Differences of pH between the carbon and the magnetic power and between the carbon and other inorg. filler component are <=4.
