Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium capable of improving both electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running performance. CONSTITUTION: When a magnetic layer is formed on the surface of a base film by coating with a magnetic coating material, the ratio (PλL/PλS) of the mean (PλL) of power of 10-50μm wavelength component on the surface of the base film to the mean (PλS) of power of 1-5μm wavelength component is <=7. The center line average roughness Ra is regulated to <=0.007μm.
