Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain an ideal recording and reproducing operation by setting the ratio of the radius of curvature in the longitudinal direction of the head of a rotary magnetic head to the radius in the thickness direction of the head to a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION: An Ry/Rx is set to be <=0.17 by defining the radius of curvature in the longitudinal direction of the head to the head of the rotary magnetic head as Rx and the radius of curvature of the width direction of the head as Ry. Thus, since the omission of an RF signal accompanying the spacing of a tape from the vicinity of the center to the vicinity of the outlet of a rotary drum is eliminated, the rotary magnetic head in which the ideal recording operation of a digital signal is made possible is obtained.
