Summary:PURPOSE: To backup the line of an optical fiber at the time of the fault occurence at the line without installing another optical fiber exclusive for a standby line. CONSTITUTION: When the optical fiber is normal, the switchs 25a, 25b, 41a and 41b of line switchs 25 and 41 are connected like (a). Thereby, signals outputted from the terminal frames 1a and 11a of the zero systems of systems 1 and 2 are transmitted to the terminal frames 6a and 16a of corresponding zero systems respectively through optical fibers 31a and 31c. When the optical fiber 31a is unserviceable because a fault is generated at the optical fiber 31a like (b), the switches 25a and 41a are switched. Thereby, a signal outputted from the terminal frame 1a of the zero system of the system 1 is wave- synthesized with the optical fiber 31c at a 3dB coupler 25d and transmitted to the terminal frame 6a of the zero system through the optical fiber 31c. When a fault is generated at the optical fiber 31a, backup is attained like (c).
