Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound for liquid crystal display elements, etc., containing a silacyclohexane ring, having a nematic liquid crystal phase extended to low temperatures, excellent in viscosity and compatibility at a low temperature and capable of providing a liquid crystal composition having good response speed at a low temperature. CONSTITUTION: This new silacyclohexane compound is expressed by formula I [R is a 1-10C alkyl, a 1-10C mono or difluoroalkyl, a 2-7C alkoxylakyl or a 2-8C alkenyl; either one of A ring and B ring is a trans-1(4)-sila-1,4- cyclohexylene and another is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or trans-1(4)-sila-1,4- cyclohexylene; Z in CN, F, Cl, CF3 , OCF3 , etc.; L1 is H or F; L2 is H, F or Cl]. The compound has a nematic liquid crystal extended to low temperatures and is useful for liquid crystal compositions. The compound is obtained by reacting an organometallic reagent of the formula RM [M is MgP (P is a halogen) with a compound of formula II (Z is a halogen).
