PURPOSE: To cause an air conditioner having various kinds of operation modes to set an operation mode automatically. CONSTITUTION: A frame member 1 fixed in a room is provided with a heat exchanger 2, a blower 5, a temperature sensor 9 and a room temperature setting means 10. In turn, an outdoor device is provided with an outdoor side heat exchanger 6 and a compressor 7, wherein both heat exchangers 4 and 6 and the compressor 7 are communicated from each other by a refrigerant pipe 8. Various kinds of operations modes for changing a control condition for the compressor 7 or the blower 5 are set and stored in a memory part. There are provided a comparison circuit for comparing temperature data of the temperature sensor 9 with that of the room temperature setting means 10, and a judging-selecting circuit for inputting a signal of a timing generating circuit. The judging-selecting circuit may select an operation mode in the memory part in response to the temperature data in the comparison circuit with a signal of the timing generation circuit and the judging-selecting circuit instructs the operation based on this specified operation mode only when an air conditioner operates for a specified period of time, continues its operation for a specified period of time and obtains the temperature corresponding to the specified operation mode.
