Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently convert a hydroxyl group at the 2-position of a trifluoropropanol derivative into a halogen and to selectively obtain the subject derivative for inverting absolute configuration of a trifluoromethyl group on a carbon atom at the 2-position. CONSTITUTION:(A) A 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol derivative of formula I (A is an aliphatic hydrocarbon or an alicyclic hydrocarbon monofunctional group which may contain one or more substituent groups, respectively or Cl, etc.) is reacted with (B) an organic halogen compound of the formula, X-R4 (X is Cl, Br or I; R4 is a group which does not contain H and contains the whole Hs, bonded a carbon atom, replaced with halogens) in the presence of (C) a phosphine compound of formula II (R1 to R3 are each an aliphatic hydrocarbon, an alicyclic hydrocarbon or an aromatic hydrocarbon monofunctional group) to give a 2-halogeno-1,1,1-trifluoropropane derivative of formula III. In the case wherein the component (A) is an optically active substance of formula IV (*C is an asymmetric carbon atom), the objective optically active derivative of formula V can be obtained.
