Summary:PURPOSE: To provide an optimum error correcting and decoding method for a communication system where a random error and a burst error occurs frequency. CONSTITUTION: Random error correction and decoding are performed for received codes to generate a set A of decoding candidates (processing a) and burst error correction and decoding are performed for the received codes to generate a set B of decoding candidates (processing b). Both sets are merged (processing c) and a preliminary (processing d) for searching decoding candidates which are common to the sets A and B is performed. Then a final decoded word is selected out of the decoding candidates of the sets A and B according to the number of the common decoding candidates.
