Summary:PURPOSE: To provide an optical writing element wherein fluctuation in quantity of light of luminous dots is small. CONSTITUTION: On an inner face of an anode substrate 2 of an envelope 4, luminous dots 8 are arranged in a staggering shape in two rows. In between the two rows of the luminous dots 8 and in between wiring conductors 6 of the luminous dots 8, band-like control electrodes are provided. On each of the two rows of the luminous dots 8, a cathode 22 is provided. The wiring conductors 6 to be connected to the luminous dots 8 and the outward part of the upper face of the anode substrate 2 are covered with an insulating layer 12. A driver IC 13 arranged on the insulating layer 12 and the wiring conductors 6 are connected by a wire 15. On an edge part 12a of the inside of the insulating layer 12, shielding members 21 are provided. The shielding member 21 is higher than the interval between the luminous dot 8 and the cathode 22. As the shielding members 21 partition the most part of the insulating layer 12 and the luminous dots 8, an electron charged on the insulating layer 12 does not change the quantity of light of the luminous dots 8. As the shielding members 21 shield the wire 15 and the luminous dots 8, the electric field of the wire 15 does not change the quantity of light of the luminous dots 8.
