Summary:PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture a high performance nickel secondary battery by housing an electrodes group in an enclosed vessel together with alkaline electrolyte, charging the same initially at high temperature, and performing heat-exchange between the enclosed vessel and a not yet initially charged enclosed vessel. CONSTITUTION: A separator is interposed between a non-sintered type nickel positive electrode and a negative electrode containing hydrogen storage alloy so as to insulate the same for manufacturing an electrode group. The electrode group is contained in an enclosed vessel together with an alkaline electrolyte so as to carry out initial charge at a high temperature of 40 to 120 deg.C. Heat- exchanging is carried out between the enclosed vessel after the initial charge and a not yet initially charged enclosed vessel so that the enclosed vessel after the initial charge is cooled and the not yet initially charged enclosed vessel is heated. The excessive rise of a manufacturing atmosphere temperature owing to the heat radiation of the enclosed vessel after the initial charge can be suppressed. Since the heating time of the not yet initially charged enclosed vessel is shortened, the initial charge can efficiently be conducted.
