PURPOSE: To display easy-to-see character information from the periphery of the vehicle's current position up to a distance on a bird's-eye viewing road map. CONSTITUTION: This device transforms road map stored in a road map storing means to a bird's-eye system road map and plots the transferred map on a display means, and also draws the character information stored in a character information storing means at a corresponding position to the bird's-eye view with all the characters at the same height. Then, the device draws the character information corresponding to a narrow area in the character information of plural hieralchies for periphery of the current position of the vehicle, and plots character information corresponding to a wide area for a distance from the current position of the vehicle. Also, when the character information corresponding to the wide area is plotted before the character information corresponding to the narrow area is drawn but both character information are laid over the other, the former is overwritten by the latter.
