Summary:PURPOSE: To restrict the electron emission positions from hot cathodes in an image display device using the linear hot cathodes as electron beam sources. CONSTITUTION: An envelope 1 is constituted of a front plate 2, a back plate 3, and side plates 4, and the inside is evacuated. Multiple modulating electrodes extended in the vertical direction are arranged in the horizontal direction on the back plate 3, and horizontal focusing/deflecting electrodes 8 are arranged at slight intervals on both sides. Barrier electrodes 9 are arranged on the outsides. Linear hot cathodes 7 are arranged along the modulating electrodes 6 at a slight distance above the modulating electrodes 6 and supported by stanchions 13. A pair of vertical focusing/deflecting electrodes 10 extended in the horizontal direction are provided to cross the linear hot cathodes 7. The peripheries of the portions of the linear hot cathodes 7 near the vertical focuting/deflecting electrodes 10 are covered by cylindrical cover electrodes 12.
