Summary:PURPOSE: To provide the subject new compound consisting of a phytoalexin of rice, having antibacterial action on the blast and sheath blight of rice, having low toxicity, free from environmental pollution and useful as an active component of a blast controlling agent or a sheath blight controlling agent for rice plant. CONSTITUTION: This compound has a cassane skeleton expressed by formula (R1 are H, H or (α-H, β-OH; R2 are (α-H, β-OH, H, H or O; R3 are O or (α-H, β-OH), e.g. phytocassane A, B, C and D. The compound has the following physical and chemical properties. Soluble in acetone, CHCl3 , MeOH and EtOH; soluble at a concentration of about 100ppm in water containing a surfactant; having a precision molecular weight (determined by high resolution mass spectrometry) of 316.2052 (phytocassane A, C20 H28 O3 ), 335.2286 (phytocassane B, C20 H31 O4 ), 318.2164 (phytocassane C, C20 H30 O3 ) and 316.2048 (phytocassane D, C20 H28 O3 ); etc.
