Summary:PURPOSE: To provide a thin-film optical waveguide element which has high light utilization efficiency in optical waveguides having waveguide boundaries, has an excellent propagation characteristic and is easily formable and a process for producing this element. CONSTITUTION: The optical waveguides 2 being in contact with the optical waveguide boundaries Xa , Xb of a waveguide optical system 3 and existing before and after a waveguide direction change are formed as single mode waveguides set at such film thicknesses tA, tB at which a single mode is attained, by which the generation of the mode light exclusive of the mode of the guided light 4 guided in the optical waveguide boundaries Xa , Xb of the waveguide optical system 3 by mode conversion is averted.
