PURPOSE: To realize an NTSC system television receiver displaying an EDTV2 system television signal in an easy to see way. CONSTITUTION: A video signal S0 from a signal processing section 1 receiving a television radio wave and providing the output of a video signal is given to an EDTV 2 identification signal detection IC 10, from which an EDTV 2 signal S4 is obtained. A main image part signal S5 is obtained by an S-R flip- flop 8 and counters 6, 7 receiving synchronizing signals S2, S3 from a synchronizing separator circuit 5 and providing an output at 30, 211H, the EDTV 2 signal S4 is given to an AND gate 12 and its output is given to an OR gate 13, from which a switching signal S6 for an analog switch 3 is outputted. A video signal S0 for a main image part is displayed and a black level signal S7 is displayed for a non-image part when the EDTV 2 signal S4 is logical 1 by the analog switch 3. The analog switch signal S6 is always logical 1 when the EDTV 2 signal S4 is logical 0 and the video signal S0 is outputted.
