Summary:PURPOSE: To detect an erroneous feeding by detecting the page number description area of character pattern data at every inputted sheet and monitoring displaced quantity. CONSTITUTION: A picture for one page, which an image scanner outputs, is read into a character recognition device. Then, the respective areas of a page number 1, a pole 2 and the text 3 are extracted and processed. A page number read processing is executed, and displacement quantity between the page number 1 which is read in previous time and the page number 1 of this time is inspected by using the read result. Then, the presence or absence of the occurrence of abnormality such as duplex feeding is monitored. A processing for recording the occurrence situation of the error such as the number of pages where abnormality occurs is executed. Then, the read processing of the pole 2 is executed. It often happens that an annotation area is separated from the text 3 by a long line 4 starting from the left end of a document. Thus, an annotation 5 is separated from the text 3 by using the characteristic, and they are separately managed. Then, the text 3 is read.
