Summary:PURPOSE: To assign an alternative sector and evade a system-down state even if a fault occurs to an unused disk area during data restructuring by providing an array controller with a table which manages whether or not a recording area of a disk device is used. CONSTITUTION: The management table which shows whether or not a disk area is used by the system is provided. For example, the management table shows that blocks following a block 241 of a disk device 201, a block 242 of a disk device 202, a block 243 of a disk device 203, a block 244 of a disk device 204, and a block 243 of a disk 205 are not used. If a fault occurs while the block 243 of the disk device 203 is being restructured, the array controller detects the block 243 being a disk area that is not used by the system in the management table and assigns a stand-by block 246 as an alternative block for the block 243 to continue subsequent restructuring.
