Summary:PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of attraction of a magnetic head in a recording region by providing protrusions on the magnetic layer surface of the region without mechanically treating the under side of the recording region of the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic layer is formed on a non-magnetic substrate through an undercoat layer as necessary. Protrusions are formed in the region where the magnetic head on the magnetic layer side surface of the non-magnetic substrate or the undercoat layer performs a CSS(contact start and stop). Moreover, non-magnetic material protrusions are formed so as to cover 0.1 to 40% of the magnetic layer surface of a data recording region. The height of the protrusions formed on the magnetic layer surface of the recording region is made less than 40nm. Furthermore, in the CSS region, protrusions having 1 to 60nm heights and average values of graphic areas surrounded by the contour lines at the height of 1nm or less from the apex of the protrusion being less than 2μm , are formed 10 to 10 pieces per 1mm .
