PURPOSE: To provide a word dictionary retrieval device capable of suppressing memory capacity consumption by indexes while accelerating dictionary retrieval using the indexes. CONSTITUTION: In an index structure in this device, primary and secondary indexes 1 and 2, a header word main body index 3 and a differential character string buffer 4 are provided and an item I for each word in the index 3 is accessed through the indexes 1 and 2. Since the item I is fixed length data, access to the items in front and behind in the index 3 is accelerated. The item I is provided with an overlapping character number 3a with the word in front, a differential character string length 3b with the word in front and a pointer 3c for indicating a storage position in the buffer 4 of the differential character string with the word in front. Since the differential character string with the word in front is stored in the buffer 4 so as not to overlap with any partial character strings in the buffer 4, the memory capacity consumption by the buffer 4 is suppressed.
