Summary:PURPOSE: To improve the accuracy and the efficiency of retrieval by extending a retrieving condition close to user's intention based on an input sentence. CONSTITUTION: A language processing part 13 analyzes the input sentence inputted from an input/output device 11 to obtain an analytic result showing the element of the input sentence according to the syntax pattern of the input sentence and a syntax pattern. An extension part 14 refers to an extension rule storage part 16 and a dictionary part 15 and extends each element of the input sentence in accordance with an extension rule corresponding to the syntax pattern of the input sentence to obtain extension contents corresponding to the input sentence. A retrieving condition generation part 17 generates a retrieving condition corresponding to the extension contents corresponding to the input sentence obtained by the extension part 14. A retrieving part 18 retrieves a document meeting this retrieving condition from a data base 19.
